John Stevens

JOHN STEVENS is originally from Buffalo, NY. After completing degrees in Tuba performance at the Eastman School of Music and Yale University, he enjoyed a successful career as a free-lance performer based in New York City. He performed with virtually every orchestra in New York, was a member of the New York Tuba Quartet and many other chamber groups, was the principal tubist in the Aspen Festival Orchestra, toured and recorded with a number of groups including Chuck Mangione, the American Brass Quintet and the San Francisco Ballet, and was the tuba soloist in the original Broadway production of BARNUM.

John was on the faculty of the University of Miami (FL) School of Music for four years, while also performing as principal tubist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida and the Miami Opera. In 1985 he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music, where he is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium and a member of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet. From 1991-1996 he was also the Director of the School of Music.

As a composer and arranger, John is internationally renowned for his works for brass. In addition to the works he has composed or arranged for Symphonia, his compositions have been commissioned or recorded by Roger Bobo, Summit Brass Tuba Quartet, Denver Brass, Wisconsin Brass Quintet, New York Tuba Quartet, Toby Hanks, James Jenkins and others. His many works for tuba, tuba ensemble and brass quintet are regularly performed by ensembles and soloists all over the world and he has recently been commissioned to compose a tuba concerto by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which is to be premiered by CSO tubist Gene Pokorny in 1999.

John has recorded an LP of his own compositions on Mark Records entitled POWER and has also recorded his three brass quintets with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet. He has been on the TUBA Executive Committee and is a frequent conductor, soloist, clinician, competition judge and composer/arranger at national and international conferences and symposia.
