    Willson 2960 questions/ponderings

I was chatting with Gail Robertson the other day, and she expressed her dislike of the Willson 2960. (Obviously, she loves the 2950)

Then I remembered this quote from Dave:

With so little information seemingly available in the US for the 2960, I thought Id spin up this thread to collect any thoughts/experience folks may have.

Was there anything specific she disliked about the 2960 compared to the 2950?

She remembered she played the 2960 twice and didn’t like it. She forgets why. LOL

I’ve played an older (mid-1980s) 2900. Have never laid hands on a 2950 nor 2960.

I must say that I never really got on with Willson euphoniums. To me they don't sound lively enough. They do have a very stable sound across the range. So if you like the sound, that is a good thing. The only thing I remember from playing them a few years ago is that the 2950 felt tubby to me. The 2960 was more a true euphonium, at least to ME. But both were not really my cup of tea..

I know folks who love the 2900 but hate the 2950 (one, in particular, calling it “a pig”).

I saw someone selling one here on the local market. It was a 2960 TA. This was a fairly petite person and they said it was just too big an instrument. I think it's marketed primarily to UK brass bands, right?

I did wonder if maybe the more traditional Willson models with the medium shank was marketed towards more efficiency and a clearer sound? I'd definitely try a Willson if I had the chance.

That said, the most famous player I knew on it was Bente Illevold and she just announced she's moved to Shires.

Bente played on a Q41 for quite a while and just took delivery of a Shires Custom euph. (Dave would probably know how long she had the Q41)

I've only tried one briefly but I thought it was great!
