Thread: Baritone mouthpiece suggestions

  1. Baritone mouthpiece suggestions

I'm hoping that somebody with experience playing both euphonium and baritone can give me some guidance on choosing a good mouthpiece for the baritone. I've been playing euphonium and trombone for years, and I recently picked up a Besson baritone and would like to find a good mouthpiece to use with it.
Currently I use a Warburton Demondre or a Schilke 52E2 on the euphonium and a Schilke 51D on trombone. All the mouthpieces I have are large bore, so I was hoping to at least find a starting point for the baritone without randomly ordering a bunch of small bore mouthpieces. I'm guessing that the 52E2 and 51D are probably bigger than I would want on a baritone, but I'm not sure... If not, I would probably start by trying one of them in a small bore version.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

6bs is THE classic baritone mouthpiece.

Also, stop playing a 51D on trombone. :P

  4. A few mouthpieces that have worked for me are,

a Doug Elliott F cup with an F3 shank and the rim of your choice,
if you like stainless, a Giddings Seiji Nakazawa.

as stated above, a Wick 6BS is a safe choice and I know a couple players who sound good on a Bach 5GS.

Ok, I'll bite.... What's your beef with the 51D and what would you recommend instead?

Also, thanks for the other replies. Looks like I need to find a 6bs to try.

I like 51d on euphonium but it’s just too deep to get a good characteristic sound on trombone. You need to be able to brighten up the trombone when the music calls for it. If you want to stay in roughly the same size, try schilke 51c4 for trombone.

I use an Alliance DC5S with my British baritone - very responsive and great sound.
