Thread: Glyn Williams now with Adams

  1. I can verify that there was a LOT of interest in the Adams euphoniums two weeks ago. Gary brought an E2 and E3 as well as his own "E1/2" I had my short action E3 there as well. All four horns were tried by a number of the euphonium players there for the summer school.

    Doug,

Did you get a chance to play the E1/E2 of Gary's? I'm very curious about how that horn played.

    Mike,

I did not. I played the E3 he had, but I didn't want to mess around with his horn...plus, it is configured almost as an E2 and is heavy for me. I listened to him play my E3 and his E1/2 and the regular E3 in comparison with each other. I felt my E3 was closer to the sound of his E1/2 than the regular E3. A bit lighter than Gary's horn (in his hands) but with a "shinier" sound in the high range. My E3 was much more responsive and a "bigger" sound than the standard .60 yellow brass silver plated E3.

Doug, is the responsiveness of your horn due to the .60 metal and SS bell or does the valve section also contribute?

A couple of corrections. My euphonium was/is .70 yellow brass except for the .60 SS bell.

When I auditioned in 2017, it clearly played with a richer sound and felt more responsive to me than three other E3's that I auditioned at the same time. I had no idea it had the short action valves until after the audition when Miel told me it was a prototype.

The upgrade to the 0.60 SS bell and red brass leadpipe just made things better. I would say that my experience with the demos Gary brought to IBBSS just reinforced my experience of 5 years ago.

I honestly dont know what contribution the SS bell, leadpipe, 0.70 yellow brass, and valveset make by themselves, I just know that I am fortunate to have such a unique and fantastic horn.
