    And then there were two...

As you could tell from my signature at the end of any postings, I owned three euphoniums. My Adams E3, my Wessex Dolce and my B&H Imperial. I couldn't see parting with any of them, until recently. After our move to Florida last year, the number of ensembles and groups I play in dramatically decreased, which is what I wanted. I play now only in one community concert band and one brass quintet. That seems to be satisfying my musical ambitions just fine.

Our community band takes in perhaps a dozen or more talented high schoolers to play with the band. Our euphonium section, which consists mostly of me and another fellow, got a high school senior for this past season. He is a real nice kid, and he plays fairly well, although a little rough around the edges. If I had the time and gumption, I would give him lessons. But I do offer advice as I see fit and as he requests. He plans to attend college in Gainesville (University of Florida) in the fall of 2023 and major in music. He does not own his own euphonium. I brought my Wessex in a while back and let him try it for a few weeks. He said he had to buy a horn and was looking around for one. After playing with him for several concerts this past season and getting to know him, I decided to give him my Wessex horn after he told me he really liked it. I really can't justify having three euphoniums, and I would hardly ever play it in my current circumstances. If I did need another euphonium (my Adams getting worked on or playing in a crowd and worried about banging my horn), I would probably use the Imperial. So, now I am down to 2 euphoniums, and I will remove the Wessex from my signature. It served me well.

What a nice thing to do John! I’m sure the student loves it. UF is an excellent school. Both my sons went there.

Thanks, Rick. Linda and I may wander up there soon as we continue to see all there is to see in the great state of Florida. If they have a Tuba Christmas, I may see about playing in that. Did either of your sons do anything in music at UF?

What a great, magnanimous gesture. I'm sure he will remember you as a significant influence on his musical journey.

My oldest son played trumpet for about two weeks in grade school and quit as he didn't care for it. My youngest son played trombone, euph, and was H.S. band captain his senior year. He did not play at UF as he was focused on studying hard for electrical/computer engineering. He liked UF so well he got his masters and PhD there. I like to joke that I didn't go to UF but both sons and a lot of my money went to UF.

My oldest (daughter) played trumpet for one year. My middle child (son) briefly played trumpet but then migrated to percussion (he is really good!). My youngest (son) is a euphonium player. (They are all adults now)

It's nice when the kiddies pick up an instrument(s). My daughter (45) plays piano and clarinet. My son played euphonium/trombone for just a bit in school, then ditched them for sports and BMX racing. At 52 almost, he seems to want to pick up something now, maybe guitar, piano, don't know for sure. You are certainly never too late to start or resume in my opinion.

iMav, with your two sons, you could have a euphonium band, you've got the drums, just need a tin whistle or harmonica, bass, and piano and you're all set!

  8. John,

You da man! That is wonderful that you helped this young man so much. So now both you and I are down to just two, an Adam E3 and Boosey & Hawkes Imperial each.

Thanks, Doug. Pretty cool we both end up with an E3 and Imperial.

I was gifted my Conn 20J tuba from the former bass player in our church band. He downsized homes due to being home alone, and pretty much on the road full time. He appreciated my brass playing and the fact I take care of my instruments. His only stipulation: “If I’m ever homeless and hungry, I want it back!”

Once I age out of playing, my trumpet playing grandson gets first crack at any of my horns, then high on my probably give to list is the local school band. Small rural school, with limited funds for the band. I’ve always preferred to be a band booster as opposed to being an athletic supporter.
