Thread: Mouthpiece shank size JP 274

  1. #11
the packer (and any large bore mouthpiece shank) should have an inner diameter of 13.5mm, or .530 inches.

conversely, any mouthpiece you use will come to a stop at the part of the shank where it is 13.5mm across.

the length that is sticks out, or the depth of penetration will vary from brand to brand. I have had a king euphonium that measured more than .530, and it was tricky finding a mouthpiece that worked with the shank. Bach and warburton were my only options

  2. Thank you all so much for your help! Mouthpieces have always been somewhat of a mystery to me, but now I think I got a hang of it, thanks to your help. I'm a little surprised though that they never state the different lengths of the mouthpiece in the stats. Oh well, I had hoped to be able to order some mouthpiece from the internet, but it seems that I cannot avoid going to the local store and bring the JP, my ears and a ruler, and start trying out a lot of different brands.

For better or worse, that is the best way to shop for mouthpieces. Luckily, most brass instruments and mouthpieces are made well enough that there is some hope of them actually working. I'm an idiot, so I have encountered much crazier things than a mouthpiece being slightly too long.

Best of luck in your search for something you like.
Hobbyist. Collector. Oval rotary guy. Unpaid shill for Josef Klier mouthpieces.

Thanks! When I mean "local", I mean one of two stores in Sweden with a stock of multiple brands, 400 km away. That's why I hoped for an easier solution.

A report on the resolution. I took the trip and tested 8-9 mouthpieces. The new schilkes were shorter and more in tune, but somehow, the SM4 resonated with the horn in a completely different way, giving it the deep euphonium singing sound that I had hoped to find with the 274. I never would've realised that the mouthpiece not only could give a deeper sound, but make it sound like a much more expensive instrument. Thank you for all your advice and help.
