Looking forward to hearing your further impressions!

Just a note, which I have pointed out before (and have to remind myself about now and then). A heavy, well braced horn like a Willson can take...

Should You Buy a Pro Horn?

I put some thoughts in a blog post. Feel free to comment on the blog (or here):

  3. Sticky: FS: Great Olds Studio 4-Valve Bell-Front Euphonium

This is one of the classic American-style euphoniums and is unusually good condition. It looks VERY lightly used. Includes the original hard case. The Olds typically has a very focused sound. Current...

OK, here is one from left field! How about a Wessex Superbone? It has 3 valves plus a slide, and it's a dual-bore (.500-.525) which might help a little.

In its normal use, the valves are operated...

Well, that is interesting! My first thought was that some people take their pistons out when they store a horn. But it looks like the 4th piston is in place, so they may truly be missing. I'm sure...

I would suggest looking at the specs and choose the one with the largest bore. I see a lot that are .500. Euphoniums are typically in the range of .560 (American-style horns) to .592 or more. A .500...

Um, probably not! I just don't have the time to quadruple the comparisons (especially when you count compiling the videos, which actually takes longer than the playing part for the way I like to do...

Very nice review, Doug, with your usual clarity and careful detail! It's clear that this is going to be a good addition to our market choices.

FWIW, I agree that the statement about the appearance...
  9. Torolf Molgaard, Jazz Euphonium: "Forgetting You"

This is one of the songs Danish Trombonist Torolf Molgaard sent me in 1984 along with a very nice audio message. Unfortunately, this song had a couple of short technical glitches, which sounded like...

I'm sure if he were able, he would have dropped a small fish into one of the horn cases.

    Entertaining Animals

We've seen musicians playing for cows. This is a new one, done at the Mystic (CT) Aquarium:

Sorry about that! The 2280 wandered into my brain and got stuck there.

I can't speak for Europe, but in the USA the market for the 2266 and similar horns seems to have shrunken. It's too bad,...

There is a nice 2280 for sale right now, and it can ship worldwide:

  15. FS: King 2280 in Silver - Great Condition

The horn looks very nice and comes with a hard case. I can see just a couple of dents in the large tubes, but they are minimal. Starting bid is $1,325 and it ships worldwide (free in USA).

We have a problem in the euphonium world. Part is "attitude." If you are an aspiring euphonium player, do you want to buy a horn that looks a lot different from the ones Bowman/Childs/Mead/etc. play?...

I think some music stores (here) are dropping such lines in favor of carrying their own name on Chinese stencil instruments. However, Brasswind still lists the 2280 and says it is in stock:

Wow - that's a great review/article! (I have to listen to the recordings yet - lots going on for me right now!)

I will take exception with one point:

I've never worried about keeping a horn in the trunk. If it is really hot, like hot enough to melt vinyl, then I'd worry! A hot trunk may dry out your valves, so be ready for that.

That's good news! If it were stuck in the horn (anywhere before the tuning slide) you would absolutely notice a problem playing the instrument! I confess I have temporarily lost a used Spitball from...

In addition to my question above, does the horn play at all? And do the valves work now? That would narrow down where the foam is stuck.

I once forgot to remove my tuning slide (which is why I...

Looks like a nice horn! Be patient with your polishing - there are a lot of square inches there, and some of them are hard to get to!
