FS: Conn 5-Valve Short-Action Double Bell Euphonium - ONE OWNER

This has to be the nicest non-restored DBE I've seen so far! It's a silver horn with gold wash in the bells. It was made around 1945. The horn itself looks nearly perfect; the hard case (original) looks very solid, although a new handle might be nice. This is outside the price range I normally post for DBE's, but because of its condition I decided to go ahead. Bidding starts at $3,500 and buy-it-now price is $4,550 (??). CHECK OUT THE MANY PHOTOS IN THE LISTING.

A forum member asked me offline for my thoughts on the price. The person is not planning to bid, so I thought I'd share my thoughts and get other opinions.

Assuming the pistons are in good shape, I'd think $3k-3.5K might be fair. The fact that the case seems to be sturdy is a plus if you're ever going to take it anywhere. I've never flown with mine, but I have taken under a bus and on long, packed car trips. The case is sturdy on mine, too. If you notice, some of these come only with a gig bag. The configuration of this one is my personal ideal - 5 short-action valves and curved bells. The fact that is was made around mid-century is also a plus. Those are some reflections, but a fair price is one you can pay without going hungry, and will feel good about once you have had the horn for a while.

This is a very tempting horn but that is a tough price… how often does this configuration come up for sale? Is it relatively rare at this point?

Very wise counsel, Dave (Werden)! I was thinking in the same $3k-$3.5k price range and definitely remembered this was your (Dave Werden’s) ideal configuration from a thread last year (link below). Looking at the picture I fully believe that instrument will clean up and have an absolutely fantastic frosted silver luster!! Not sure how brilliant the gold wash bells would get - but what a find!!
