- How do I upload a picture?
- You can upload one or more pictures to appear along with your message. To do this you need to A) send the picture to our server, and B) attach that picture to your message. The pictures must be either in GIF or JPG format. Here are the specifics:
1) Click the "Attach File(s)" button near the bottom of the message editing screen.
2) From the new window that opens, click the Browse button to find the file on your computer.
3) Click the Upload File button
4) Click the Attach File link
The new file upload window should close and you should see the file you just uploaded listed below the editing screen. Once you post your message, the picture(s) should appear at the bottom of the message.
- How can I make my profile visible to others?
- This forum's software gives you the choice of whether to share your user profile. To adjust this you need to click the "profile" link near the top of the page, then select "Personal Options." You will see your first option there is "Profile Visibility" and yours is set to Off. Just change that and click the Update Profile button at the bottom of the page. (You need to be logged in to do this.)
- Why do email addresses look wrong (the word REMOVE is within the address)?
- People who want to sent you all kinds of junk mail (Spam) will use automated software to go around the web copying email addresses. This forum tries to protect you from the spammers by adding the word "REMOVE" in the middle of your email address. If your email address is me@somedomain.com, the spammers' software will copy the address as me@somREMOVEedomain.com. Any emails they send to that address will not reach you. If you wish to email a user in the forum, you just take out the word REMOVE from within the email address.
- How can I subscribe to a topic (or to an entire category)?
- If you want to be notified of posts and replies within an entire category, go to your PROFILE link. Under Personal Options, you can specify which of the listed categories you wish to subscribe to by pressing down on the CTRL key and clicking on the desired categories. To cancel a subscription, return to the Profile and unclick the category.
- If you want to be notified of replies within a specific topic, there are two possibilities. If you create a new topic, you can subscribe by clicking the “Subscribe to this topic” checkbox when creating your message. To subscribe without creating a message in the topic, click on the Topic Tools feature, and choose “Subscribe to this topic” from the drop-down selection.
- Where are the older messages (or why am I seeing so MANY old messages)?
- In your PROFILE link, under Personal Options, you can set the number of "Days back to view topics for." This determines when topics are hidden from you to reduce the clutter a bit. I have set a high number as default, but it may have changed if you are not seeing older messages. But if you want to reduce the number of old messages you see, just change that to a lower number, such as 30. The messages older than 30 days will still be found in a search, but they won't clutter your main veiw.
- NOTE: the feature of displaying the new threads with a special icon will only work properly if you use the forum's navigation controls to get around within the forum. Do not use the browser's back-arrow button to go back to the home page after reading a thread. (The forum keeps track of topics/threads you have read by using browser cookies. If you do not click on the forum's navigation controls, you may be preventing the forum from setting those cookies, so it will lose track of what you have already read.)
As you are reading a topic, at the top and bottom of the list of messages you will see a "bread-crumb trail" to make it easier to navigate. It has a series of links that start with the home page of the forum and continue to the topic you are reading at the time. While reading messages in the main forum (not this FAQ section), you will see that the 2nd link in the bread-crumb trail is "Women in Woodworking", which will take you to the main list of topics. Clicking the FORUMS link (the first one in the trail) will take you to the forum's home page, which has a link to the Women in Woodworking topic list, a link to this FAQ section, and a link to your Private Topics.
- Why can't I log in (or why can't I post messages)?
- In order to control spam and unwanted postings, the forum is set to require cookies. You need to set your browser to accept cookies, at least from www.dwerden.com. Also, if you have any security software running (such as Norton/Symantec, McAfee, AVG, ZoneAlarm, Trend Micro / PC-cillin, and many others) those need to allow our cookies as well. If you have logged in successfully, the login box should be replaced with the header for "Private Messages" on the left. If you don't see that, then you probably are blocking our cookies somehow.
- How do I post a message? I don't see a link for that!
- First, you have to be logged in to post a message.
- Second, you have to within a Category that allows posts. We don't let you create one of the top 2 levels of Categories, so there is no post option there. For example, if you are in the area called "Euphonium" you can not post because that is a Category. But when you click on one of the Sub-Categories you see there, such as "Euphonium Music", you will then be viewing user-created topics and you should see a link near the top of the page called "new topic" that will let you create a new topic. Or you can click on one of the existing topics and reply to an existing message within (look for the Reply link under each message).
- What if I don't see a suitable place to put my comment?
- What if I get an error while signing up for the Forum?
- If you get an error while signing up that says ":Variable FTVAR_AUTHORICONFILEFRM is undefined.", please e-mail the Forum Administrator. Please let us know if you are using a Macintosh and Netscape (we are tracking an issue with that combination). In your email, include the user name you desire, and your first/last name. We will sign you up and then you can log in and edit your information.
- Why are the fonts so small?!?!
- There are two buttons near the top-right side of the page to increase or decrease the size of the fonts. They look like a- and A+.
