Rutgers Brass Band - Thingumybob by Paul McCartney

(Report Missing Video...)

Category: Brass Band/Ensemble
Artist: Rutgers Brass Band
Title: Thingumybob by Paul McCartney

Here is Sir Paul McCartney's original brass band composition as played by the Rutgers Brass Band. McCartney recorded the work originally with the Black Dyke Mills Band [conductor Geoffrey Brand] after it failed to work with a London-based band. It was recorded on the same day John Lennon was recording 'Good Night' for the double album 'The Beatles' [widely known as 'The White Album']. The piece was written as the theme for a TV program about the unemployed titled 'Thingumybob' and the title is recalled at the close of the opening tune. The piece was originally premiered in North America by the Princeton Brass Band under their Musical Director Dr. Stephen Arthur Allen, who is again directing it here in an attempt to make Beatles fans aware - and there were a few in this audience - of an original Beatles-period work for brass band by McCartney, who grew up listening to the Black Dyke Mills Band with his father Jim [a trumpet player-another close relative played Eb bass in a brass band]. Thingumybob bears a resemblance to Jim McCartney's own song 'Walking in the Park with Eloise'. The influence of the brass band is everywhere present in the sound world of the Beatles seminal album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and it was, indeed, the Black Dyke Mills Band that play the short burst of brass band music in the song 'Yellow Submarine' at the words "And the band begins to play." This version is arranged by Keith Wardle and the music is published by Accent Music Publishing, Cornwall, UK [c] Northern Songs 1968.
