Compensating Euphoniums - Intonation:
Choose One or More to View

This is a record of tuning tests I have done on several popular brands of 4-valve compensating euphoniums. There are a couple more I would like to add as I have the chance to spend quality time with them and do some testing. I have a system I have used for many years to do these tests — it is my attempt to make the results consistent. The tests were performed with a Wick 4AL (or Wick 4AM for the Willson's medium shank), and the horns were well warmed up. Slides were adjusted for best tuning compromises and the overall tuning was set to A440. Different players would get different results, but the tendencies should be similar. If horn A is sharp on a note and horn B is sharper on the same note, other players will usually find the same relative tendencies even if the amounts of sharpness are different.

Choose the horns you want to compare from the list below. You can combine them in any way you like, but you may find it clearer to view only two at a time. The next page requires Flash to work, but you will also have the option to go to a non-Flash page instead.
