Fairly new piece, "Council Oak" - David Gillingham
We're preparing a fairly new piece by David Gillingham called, "Council Oak" for our next concert. It was commissioned by the FBA (Florida Bandmasters Assoc.) as a tribute to the Seminole Indians and a giant oak tree where their leaders would gather for important meetings in south Florida. It's different but very interesting. In the beginning there's what sounds like a slide whistle along with contra bass clarinet. It’s actually a regular flute with instructions for the flutist to remove the head joint and insert a finger in and out to get this affect. Our principal flutist said she never heard of this before. There are lots of meter changes which can be challenging. If interested here's a link to listen:
