I’m really liking the French Horn Stand idea.

I fully agree and also recommend th K&M euphonium stand with my endorsement.

Yeah, my wife & two of our kids like the Hercules variants for their woodwinds. The bigger ones are sturdy, clunky, and heavy (e.g. her b.a. bari stand) but mine is simple, small, sturdy, quickly assembled, and folds to a light & compact 11"x4"x4" (maybe a bit less than that). Nevertheless it stays at home because I've become "lazy guy carries less stuff and sets horn on bell".

In the room where I usually play there is a comfortable sofa where I can place my instruments. For the trombone there is his stand.

  7. I have two K&M stands and use them exclusively. When I had my baritone, one was set up for the smaller instrument and one for the euphonium.

One thing that helps provide additional protection is to use an old pair of socks (preferably black to match the stand) and put them over the rubber ends of the stand. This allows the horn to slip in and out of the stand quickly and also allows adjustment of the arms that hold the horn to be "tighter", thus more secure, without fear of marking the finish of the horn. Dave Shinn's picture above shows a similar approach using blue terry cloth towels.

Agree with putting something on the arms. I wanted a clean look with as little clutter as possible, so I went to a hobby store and bought some felt paper with a sticky back. I cut pieces to fit in the arms and cover the rubber. Now the horn slides in easily, no rubber residue on the horn, and I can have the arms pretty tight.

The stand with one of the arms with the sticky backed felt paper:

The paper which I got at Hobby Lobby. It is an 8x11 sheet of felt paper with a sticky back. You just cut the piece you want, peel off the cover over the sticky part, and stick it to the rubber arm. Easy.

Actually, I have done the same using the soft fabric part of Velcro tape.
