Thread: Advice offered via Zoom....

  1. I thought there was some good advice here:

One of her last points is that the audience wants us to succeed. I would suggest the few boors you encountered are very much outliers. Your bandmates also want you to succeed. Every time we play we are surrounded by people who want us to do well. Try to feed off that positive energy.

Of course, this comes from someone who loves your worst nightmare of a horn, a 1997 968, so take it for what it’s worth.

It is definitely physiological because of the sound distortion, as simply being nervous couldn’t possibly make those notes. Something that has occurred to me is that perhaps a round rim moves around too much and I ought to go for the flattest rim possibly.

I do have a Zoom appointment with a very highly regarded embouchure specialist on Wednesday morning, so hopefully this will help. Also buying a Stratos again because I suspect this time I will have to undergo a complete embouchure rebuild.
Awh man sorry to hear that, it is a tricky old solo mind. Very exposed. You won't be the only player where it went wrong

Cheers! The weird thing is I have played, very successfully, much harder pieces than this. Something about it got it my head. I never thought consciously I couldn’t play it, but evidently something got in the way of being able to battle through. The other weird thing is everyone who has said they’ve heard worse is lying. I know they’re being considerate, but I doubt very much noises like the ones I made have been heard on the contest platform have been heard before. Maybe the answer is I was underprepared. Certainly we rehearsed V2 far less than the rest of the piece.

Also on an unrelated note, if you’re going to Bugle Contest, the best of the legendary 1980s Cornish euphonium generation is making a comeback….

What happens when it goes wrong - we know why we split notes. Poor breathing, poor production and it doesn’t get much more complicated than that. The reasons behind the breathing and attacks issues maybe more complex but ultimately playing badly on a brass instrument is easy to diagnose if not to fix.

My scenario is different because I have literally no idea what happened. Or why. This was not split notes, although I ended up doing that as well (probably trying to over compensate and force the issue). That was a loss of all focus - airflow and tone and embouchure control (although I’m not entirely sure of that, hence the conversation tomorrow).

As for 968s? I never played a good one, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any! One of my ultimate heroes - Bob Childs - used one for years. I did wonder, briefly after this fudge, where downsizing might help. I used Besson 966s for a long time very comfortably and on some pretty ugly pieces too.

The main thing I’m taking out of this is that I have far too many questions!

I certainly will be there at least watching... my band aren't going to compete but my old London band from my student days will be down for the first section. Being a London band I might well be asked to play anyway is your band going then?
