Looking for a nice accapella piece for the upcoming Twin Cities workshop.

The piece I started working on won't be ready (technically challenging for me). Anyone have any suggestions for a piece? Something lyrically beautiful but not too technically difficult (still getting my fingers to "work right" after years of alcohol and drug abuse)....

    Hi Larry,

Something Dave Werden shared about six months ago on his YouTube channel might work. "Fantastic Schottische" by Gabriel. It's public domain so I have it in my Finale folder in Bb and Eb (the key Dave played it). Or... can change to another key.

    Fantastic Schottische (Gabriel) (Dave's video):

    IMSLP link:

    --- edit to add ---

If I remember right, Dave was reading the treble clef part as if it were bass clef so it sounded a 5th lower.

One of my teachers introduced me to a rather nice piece by Fred L. Clinard, Jr., titled Sonata for Unaccompanied Euphonium or Trombone, published by Shawnee Press and distributed by Hal Leonard. It's modern without being atonal. Mr. Clinard studied with R. Winston Morris at Tennessee Tech.
Pat Stuckemeyer recorded it. Link to movement one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QD1YoYHxDc

I recommend looking at the Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites. Some of the "dance" parts (minuets, Gigues) are somewhat easy to play and sound great. (after all, it's Bach). (arrangements by Doug Yeo and others)

iMav, I was already thinking about the 5th Suite's Sarabande. If you have pretty good flexibility it can be a very nice presentation:

This is the piece I am actually working on that I don't believe will be ready (just started working through it). My fine motor skills aren't great...so I need to develop things much more into muscle memory than what one would typically need to do.

Here is a recording of the Sarabande I did a while back. It a work in progress and probably could use more rubato in places, but FWIW:

I agree the Sarabande for Cello Suite 5 is an excellent choice. It also tends to be popular to play for auditions where you have an option of what you play. I think folks like the rubato capability and long tones that show off your tonal chops. Not sure how much vibrato is for being true to Bach, but maybe you don't need it. The piece has an inherent beauty all its own.

I think all of my students play that at some point. One of my favorites. I usually only assign the 2nd and 3rd movements
