Post cancer surgery, chops are . . .

    . . . *pause for effect* . . . just fine!

I put the horn to my mouth a little while ago for the first time since the skin cancer was taken off my upper lip four weeks ago, and except for the feeling that, wow, it's been a while since I've done this, it felt perfectly normal. Thank the Lord for a skilled surgeon and a good recovery.

I did long tones, gradually getting down to pedal Bb, then two-octave scales starting on that same Bb, but going no higher than the upper neighbor high G on the F scale. Then I did the five range songs in F, with the first run-thru of each an octave lower; that took me to pedal F a few times, and it was solid. I ended up with a read-thru of Drew Fennell's arrangement of "Somone to Watch Over Me". At the end of it all I felt like I had done a workout, but my chops weren't shot; I was still able to hit the high notes when I needed them. The only negative thing I noticed was a slight tendency to double-buzz in the middle range; I'm going to have to watch that.

Conclusion at the moment -- there is life after lip surgery. And thanks to all for your advice and support.

I'm so glad that things felt as they should after weeks off the horn! We are lucky indeed to live in a day when such treatments are available to us.

    Keep up the careful practice!

Bravo, good to hear David! Going slow sounds like a good plan. One melody I like to warm up on is Simon and Garfunkel's "Are You Going to Scarborough Fair". I play it pretty low starting on low 'G'. It only goes up to 'G' on the staff.

That is excellent news, David. Keep up the careful pace you are working at, and it sounds like things will be just fine in the "fullness of time".
