Perhaps that is your perception of the 2900 in general?

What are your thoughts on these recordings?
(All played on a Willson 2900, but by a very different player.)

Her sound is not at all typical of a 2900. Maybe it’s the recording, hall, mic placement or mouthpiece but the edge to her sound is not typical of that Willson model.

Amazing how subjective these things can be. Our ears can hone in on widely different characteristics.

My teacher, Rob Stattel, studied with Brian Bowman. Rob uses the same euphonium and mouthpiece - Willson 2900 (medium shank mouthpiece receiver) and BB1 mouthpiece. I've listened to Bowman recordings and I've listened to Rob, and their tones are distinct. Dr. Bowman (to my ears) has less prominent higher harmonics. If I didn't know better I'd guess he was using a bigger mouthpiece or playing an instrument with a larger bell. Rob has slightly more prominent higher harmonics to his tone. His tone is bit more like Dave Werden's.

My point is one Dave has made before: a top-level player will maintain his or her sound on various instruments. They choose their model based on what instrument makes it easiest for them to realize their preferred sound (or if I'm being cynical, depending upon the endorsement deal they get).

    Dean,
Those endorsement deals are less lucrative than you think.
Shires only pays me $500 a year to say I play a Yamaha euphonium.
    Happy holidays...Jim

    Jim:
Always good to hear from you, and happy holidays to you and your family.

I know that those endorsement deals aren't so lucrative. One of my band mates is a Yamaha artist: tuba, trombone, euphonium. He plays a 641 model, and I asked him once why he didn't upgrade to the 642. He told me that his endorsement deal just means that he gets a discount, not that they actually give him the horns.

I still appreciate the trove of music books you sent me a few years back.

Okay, this recording and Doug's recording of Horowitz are making me envious and I wanna work harder to play as well as them!

Agree, I enjoyed (sought, actually) what I characterized as the "velvety" Willson sound (bought a 2975 due to some forearm soft tissue issues that precluded an upright hold, and then a couple of 2900s), but all three of those horns (essentially all 2900s with a front configuration on the 2975) made me work too hard to carry over the band; solos too hard to hear, per audience feedback.
Here's the Willson velvet I like so well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4x1WexGCXI

I admire the voluminous camaro crash helmet that Thornton's sporting in those videos, but I thought that mullets mercifully ended in the 80s.

I have no idea what he is looking like these days. He's still around...but (according to his brother), he has no email, no cell phone, and no internet-connected computer.
