Thread: John Packer 274 and 374 review/comparison

  1. #31
FWIW, when I was a Sterling Artist, the euphonium was offered with 300mm or 305mm bell diameter. Paul Riggett told me that neither size was exact, because a lot of the final diameter is in the hands of the turner. You could aim for a certain size, but it might be slightly smaller or larger when complete.

I probably could not spot a difference of .44 inches in circumference (which amounts to a little over a 1/10 of an inch in diameter), but I might be able to spot a difference of .44 inches in diameter (which is where the bells are measured).

What's interesting is a few years ago, Packer listed the bell size of the 274 as 11", including when I bought mine (with a bell almost 12")

From the side, probably not so much.
Yes, the day before yesterday I had the two horns next to each other (766-N.S) and I immediately noticed that the bell of the 766 was bigger, even if the difference was only 0.5 cm.

You are right John. I meant to say diameter (distance across through the middle) and not circumference (distance all the way around the outside edge). All this in anticipation of finding out how the two horns sound compared to one another.

I'm with you, Sara. I want to hear the differences, too! I hope you are mending up okay. What a drag to hurt yourself and not be able to play.

You can't see me from where you are, but I'm raising my hand! Hope it goes well. You got me thinking...someday I may try this with a male voice on the top part. I'd have to jump around to stay on the harmony, but it might work if I played lightly.

Hi iMav, Thank you for starting this thread! I am really curious what the 374 sounds like. I would love to play test one, to see how it compares to my XO euph. Unfortunately they are quite hard to come by where I live. Looking forward to your comparison and your thoughts.
