    Sterling Virtuoso Arrived Today

So it's almost 11 am where I live and UPS just delivered my new-to-me Sterling Virtuoso. I have it out of the box and sitting in my home office acclimating. Will take a peek inside the case on my lunch hour. Photos and first impressions to come.

      Sound Clip of Sterling Virtuoso

      Arnie,

I know that in a private message you asked about the sound of my Sterling compared with the Besson 2051. I do not have any direct comparisons. The best example I can give you is a recording of me playing the Horovitz Concerto on my Sterling as an audition for a concerto competition a few years back (August of 2012). This was recorded in a practice studio at Salem State College.

For the best idea of the sound of the Sterling with me playing, listen to the 2nd movement from 5:50 to 11:00.

        Doug,

I have never heard this recording of you. You sound wonderful. Very nicely done. I think this is the best recording I have heard of you.

          John,

Many thanks. I agree, it probably is the best recording of me in a solo situation. This was done 10 years ago. Five years prior, in 2007, I went to a summer Tuba/Euph workshop run by Michael Milnarik, an instructor and free-lance tuba player in the Boston area. I played the Horovitz for the first time there after a couple of master classes from Roland Froscher and a young Adam Frey. I absolutely did not know the history of the piece at that time and had taught myself the piece after having had no lessons for 30+ years. After 5 years studying under Mike and traveling to England, meeting Trevor Groom and having master classes with David Childs, David Thornton, and Trevor, the recording above was the result. I am particularly proud of the 2nd movement. In comparison, here is my 2007 version (done on an extremely hot day with no air conditioning and a stage temperature heading to 100F). This was played on my old Round Stamp 1980 Sovereign, just prior to my purchase of Arnie's 2007 Prestige 2051.

Hard to compare but 5 years of daily practice and weekly lessons definitely helped.

That is class playing Doug. Thanks for sharing. It might be just the thing to inspire me to get off my flu-ridden backside and do some practice.
