Wanna Talk About Engraving? THIS Is Engraving!

The flagship Schmitt Music store in the Twin Cities has this amazing Steinway piano on display. The "engraving" here is actually white gold inlaid to make a panorama of the Twin Cities. You can have one just like it for $330,000 (plus delivery, I suppose). That started me thinking about getting a euphonium with a black finish, but one which had engraving with this effect. Maybe via a silver undercoat beneath the black???

I didn’t know that was engraving but thought it was a wrap of some kind. Very impressive!

Absolutely WOW! I have seen pictures of a few different horns with a solid color lacquer over brass or silver plate. So the engraving marks show either a gold or silver color peeking through (like here). A very fun look and a tasteful bit of flash, in my opinion. If you all want, I can try to collect them together and post them here. I never imagined doing this with something as large as a grand piano. But it does have the real estate for it (grin)!

selmer sells saxophones that are lacquered black and then engraved (and then presumably lacquered clear over that?) so that the brass shows through. It's a neat effect.

Where I first saw it was on the Canonball Saxophones website. I have also seen it done on Trombones. Loving all this eye candy. - Sara
