  1. Post Mouthpiece Upgrade

I've recently grown out of my old yamaha 48L and I don't really know what I want to upgrade to, any suggestions?

Perhaps explain what you mean by “outgrown”.

    Welcome to the forum!

The 48 mpc can be a little small for many players. Yamaha makes a 51 model or you could try the Schilke 51D (D stands for deep cup) which is pretty popular.

I assume by "outgrown" you mean that the 48L feels small on your face and you may even feel limited with the types of sound you can make with the mouthpiece. Feel free to correct if that is wrong.

I think that generally speaking most euphonium players end up with a mouthpiece in the 25.5 mm to 26 mm range or so, although lots of people play things larger or smaller than that.

One way to experiment without spending a ton of money would be to buy some Faxx mouthpieces. The Horn Guys sell them. I played a Faxx 4G when I was experimenting on various sizes after deciding to go smaller than the Wick 3AL that I played for several years. In any case, Faxx makes a 51D, 5G, and 4G that might be worth checking out.

Check out Dave Werden's YouTube channel for mouthpiece comparisons that feature a bunch of common mouthpieces and see if any sound particularly nice to you.

  5. Yeah, I'm going to get a yamaha 51D, I need a deeper cup for a mellower sound.

Cool, let us know how you like it. I have heard that Yamaha mouthpieces are nice, but never tried one myself.

  7. I got it a few hours ago, and its been better than the 48.
