    maintenance work surface

Where do you fine folks work on your euphoniums? Kitchen table? Dedicated maintenance space? I've been using my wooden work bench in the garage, but the size isn't ideal for spreading out the horn, and there are lots of things attached to the table that would love to put a dent in my euphonium. Curious as to what others use as their maintenance space.

    Regards,
    Pat

When I give my horn a bath, I use the guest bathroom tub and put all the parts (slides, valves, etc.) on the sink counter. I wash the stripped-down euphonium in the tub, sometimes I take a shower with it, and I wear rubber gloves (like you wear for doing the dishes by hand) to hang onto the horn good. I actually have another pair of rubber gloves that are real grippy, so I don't let my horn slip. I wash all the slides, valves, etc. in the sink. Then, I clean up the bathroom really good, as I value my marriage. If I have any maintenance to do to the horn, sort of the same thing. But if not giving the horn a bath, I would put the stripped horn on a very cushy bathroom mat.

If I’m flushing my horn and doing a thorough cleaning, I use the bath tub in our guest bath room with attachments to the shower nozzle (see this post for pics). Then move the horn and all its parts to the kitchen counter where there is excellent lighting and place the horn on a blue rubber mat that Dave told us about.

We don't have a lot of room in our house (well, we do, but it is all full of stuff right now!), so I try to get outside when possible to use my Quick Horn Rinse. Or if I'm in the mood I use a hose in the bell, padded/sealed with cloth, and do a reverse flush. For that I use that blue mat Rick mentioned, which is this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Wood...dp/B06X1GCF7D/

It is very touch and has not been harmed by anything I've done to it.

After flushing, I take out all the slides and use to pails to clean them out, along with the pistons and springs. Then it all comes back to my practice area where I put the horn body on one mat and the parts on another (I have 3). When they are dry I put them back together.

Our tub is not a good option - the sliding shower doors are a hazard I'd like the horn to not face. If I need to clean it in the winter, I have used our utility tub in the basement, but that is kind of a pain, so I generally take it to my local repair guy at Schmitt Music to do a good flush. While there, I shop for any accessories and supplies I need, and I can also ask the tech to look at anything on the horn that needs attention.

In an ideal world, I would have a separate practice building with a bathroom and workbench!

I use the carpeted living room floor, with something to cover the carpet in the immediate worksite vicinity. Soft landing area in case anything falls.
