I use a different mouthpiece for each trombone I have (bass trombone, large bore tenor and of course small bore tenor). It is just a matter of what feels right for the horn. I had been away from playing so long that my ear is not trained enough to notice a difference in sound, but my lips notice ease of playing!
I'm actually NOT a fan of the 51D...I "feel" restricted by it (best way I can describe it). I've wondered about the 52D...have never seen one in the wild before.

Most-likely, I'll spend a lot of money on a bunch of different mouthpieces and end up right back on my SM4U.

My choice is a Doug Elliott with 102 rim (25.9mm), I cup (similar to 51D) and 8 shank which is standard large shank backbore. Itís similar to a 51D with a larger rim.

Hi Imav, from where did you manage to source the Alliance E2?

    Received the 52D, 4BL, and the 4G.

Right away felt incredibly restricted by the Denis Wick 4BL…immediately hated it and it didn’t get any better as I pressed on.

The 52D I dislike nearly as much as the 51D. Not sure if it is cup diameter or what.

I am liking the Bach 4G. I’m going to finish practicing with it today and likely do both band rehearsals tomorrow with it. (See how I like it and if it had any positive or negative effects on my current stamina.)

While this is preliminary testing on my Schiller stencil horn…and I will retest when I have my E3 in my possession, these were pretty strong reactions on my part.

Looks like I don’t like anything with a rim diameter smaller than 26mm.

We’ll see how that holds up…and how I like LARGER rim diameters as well.

    Didn't like:
    - Denis Wick 4BL - 25.90 mm
    - Schilke 52 D - 25.78 mm

    Like:
    - Bach 4G - 26.00 mm
    - Denis Wick SM4U - 26.00 mm (current, primary mouthpiece)

    Still waiting on:
    - Mercer & Barker Euphonium BSP - MB51 - 25.50 mm
    - Mercer & Barker Euphonium BSP - Solo51 - 25.50 mm
    - Denis Wick 4AL - 26.00 mm
    - Perantucci PT-7C - 26.00 mm
    - Warburton Demondrae Thurman - 26.16 mm
    - Alliance E2 - 26.40 mm
    - K&G Euphonium 3D - 26.70 mm

Obviously, this is just ONE aspect of the mouthpieces (also cup size, rim size, etc). I'm anticipating I won't like either of the Mercer & Barker mouthpieces.
Anxious to try the 4AL and the larger diameter mouthpieces as well.

Anyone have experience with Schilke 52E2 (25.91 mm) and the 53 (26.24 mm). I'm inclined to try at least the 53 (and, perhaps, both).

Once I am done testing (and when any fellow, local musicians pick through the ones I don't like)...I'll probably offer the remaining up for 50% what I paid for them (and maybe $5-10 shipping or something). (or less...depending on need.)

I have a E3 custom with yellow brass .60mm (I don't really care for the way articulations sound with the sterling silver) and no AGR and a tuning trigger. I was a 51D player from way back but I wanted something with the same rim shape and rim width (not necessarily diameter though) as my trombone mouthpieces and felt I could do with a little more diameter than the 51D so I worked with Doug Elliott. I ended up with a EUPH N102 rim with an I cup and a I9 short stem that Doug customized to have the right gap for my fixed receiver instrument. The AGR is overly complicated and I believe it is more vulnerable to damage than a fixed receiver.

    Interesting thoughts on the AGR.

Who has had one a long time and can speak to the durability??
