    3-valve, rotary valve options.

My son (HS senior) currently plays a cheap eBay rotary valve, oval baritone. He has a genetic condition that makes his fingers very short (missing the middle bones). Looking for a better quality horn for him.

Need to be rotary valves due to his limited finger mobility (he does quite well on the rotary valves). Also, four valves is not a requirement…as his pinky is too short to be involved in fingerings.

Wessex has one that I am considering around the $1k range. Any other options out there that you would recommend? (Probably wouldn’t spend more than $3.5k-ish.)

  2. I would definitely go with the wessex horn. I don't know of many other manufactures that make German style baritones. Schiller made some in a more traditional euphonium style, but they are more expensive and difficult to find. https://www.schillerinstruments.com/...er-gold-plated is what it would look like.

Not a fan of Jim Laabs Music. They won’t get another penny from me.

Happy to give Wessex my money.

I would look for a Miraphone 53 used, perhaps set up a saved search on German eBay. Wessex makes some great instruments but IMO the ovalform baritone is not one of their best.

I would also consider perhaps getting a linkage made to be able to use the fourth valve with the left hand. It's an option on some of the rotary instruments, although it may be considerably less expensive to have a used instrument adapted in this way than to order it bespoke.

Check out the one pictured in the first few pages of this brochure for an example.

there's a listing on Ebay for "Meinl Weston Euphonium/tenor tuba" which kinda looks like it could work. I'm pretty new to the forum so I don't know what the rules are about linking to ebay outside of the "for sale" area.

    [Here is the listing. DW]:

[FYI, you are free to link to eBay listings in responses to threads, such as this one, where it addresses a specific need. DW]
