  1. Film Project

    Hello everyone,

Over the course of the past year, I have been working on quite an exciting project which I am really excited to finally share with you all today.

Back in 2019, I was a specialist extra on a film called 'The War Below' and with the support of the director John Watts, he allowed me to use some of the unused scenes from the film to create a multimedia project combining history, film and music to pay tribute to the men of The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

I was very lucky to work alongside historian Paul Reed who wrote a specially commissioned piece of writing for the project which was recorded by a very talented voice actor called Nigel Francis. The final aspect of the project was the music which was composed by Karl Whelan and featured the Euphonium as the main solo instrument in the music that was recorded. I am hoping that the music that was used in this film will play a small part in a new commission that I am currently working on with Karl Whelan.

I wanted this project to focus on the events which surrounded the attack that took place at Ovillers La Boisselle on Friday 18th August 1916. The project storyline begins with the events that took place on Saturday 1st July 1916, which resulted in heavy casualties for The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment and a short period of time where the battalion was forced to rebuild and train new drafts of replacements in preparation for a return to the front line at Ovillers La Boisselle. The next part of the project focuses on the moments leading up to the attack that took place at Ovillers La Boisselle with our project storyline coming to a close in December 1916, when the 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment were withdrawn from the front line for rest and training over the Christmas period before making their return to the front line in late January 1917.

I was lucky to record the music to this project over the course of the past few months using my 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece and my silver plated Besson Prestige 2052-2 Euphonium. I really hope that this project will encourage composers to use the Euphonium within their scores and I really hope to see the Euphonium featured more within professional film soundtracks in the future!

I really hope that you enjoy this unique tribute to all of the men who served with The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment between July 1916 and March 1917.

I love the fact that you are getting so "into" this idea! Composers usually like to learn of different sounds they can use in their music (at least, those who mostly rely on non-electronic instruments), and most orchestration classes don't do much with euphonium. The more of this you do, the better the chance that some composers pick up on the idea.

In the 1970's I started compiling a list of soundtracks that use euphonium. It is woefully out of date, but here are some of the entries:

    Album Artist Composer Song Title
Butch and Sundance: the Early Days (Soundtrack)
    Nash, Dick
    Williams, Pat

    Geronimo, An American Legend (Soundtrack)
    Marsteller, Loren

    Oklahoma Crude (Soundtrack)

    Mancini, Henry

    Heaven Can Wait
What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (Soundtrack)

  3. Hello Dave,

I think the Euphonium offers so many possibilities within an orchestra, I would honestly give anything to see the instrument featured more within film and game soundtracks!

This list is absolutely fascinating! It would be great to try and update this list in the near future!

I saw a production of Urinetown in Chatham NY this past weekend. The credits for the small pit band included one trombone. As I listened to the second tune of the night, I realized he was an uncredited doubler - sure enough, I saw the bell of his euphonium sticking out of the pit.

I recall that the Roundabout Theater (NYC) production of Chicago used a euphonium in the on-stage pit band.

  5. Hello everyone,

I have to admit that I recently did a solo recording for a BBC TV Show called 'The Repair Shop' here in The United Kingdom and it really opened my eyes up to a new way of workings. The music that I recorded was written by Ian Livingstone who is quite a famous film and video game composer.

I would honestly give anything to see the Euphonium featured more within film and video game soundtracks in the future.
