Thread: AR Resonance 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece

    AR Resonance 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece

    Hello everyone,

Last year, I contacted AR Mouthpieces as I was really interested in the new Glenn Van Looy AR Resonance Mouthpiece and upon gaining the specifications of this new mouthpiece I asked if some changes could be made which developed into a personal mouthpiece. The result was my own AR Resonance 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece which I have been playing on for over a year.

I have been blown away by the results which my own 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece has given me and I know that the AR range of mouthpieces are slowly developing popularity in the Euphonium world and I was curious if anyone on this forum owned or played on a AR Resonance mouthpiece?

I really hope that this thread will kick start a chat about this very interesting range of mouthpieces.

    Hello everyone,

The 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece is made from a bronze material and pretty much combines my favourite features from the Steven Mead and David Childs range of mouthpieces. I did a short video featuring my new 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece which you can view on the following link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2dhIomp8QE.

Thank you for all your help and support.

Interesting - can you tell us a little more about which features you utilized? The AR pieces tend a little flatter rim, and a little shallower to my feel than either the David Childs or SM pieces.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hello Mike,

The mouthpiece has a rounded rim but less rounded than the SM4XR Mouthpiece and has a 7.20mm throat. I have to admit that this mouthpiece is really comfortable and I can play for extended periods on my 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece without becoming fatigued.

I will find out the exact specifications of The 'MDPS1' Mouthpiece and get back to you later this week if this is ok?

Please do! I assume it's 26mm diameter? I am giving serious thought to ordering a 26.4mm with medium backbore, rather than the 26mm / large backbone I currently have. The bronze makes for a heavy mouthpiece and the sound in the lower middle register seems to have more resonance about it, although that is also a characteristic of the E2. I might contact Tony and see what the heaviest material he can make a mouthpiece out of, although the prospect of paying another £400 for a mouthpiece is a bit daunting.

You're bang on about stamina too - I did a two hour set, loud gig a couple of weeks back, as the only euph and still had chops left at the end. I don't think I played less than forte for the whole gig. Sadly I went on holiday for ten days and didn't take my mouthpiece or hooter so any strength reserves I'd built up, have gone.

    Hello Magikarp,

My 'MDPS1' AR Resonance Mouthpiece has a 26.00mm diameter cup and a 7.20mm throat.

I was wondering if you had seen the new Glenn Van Looy AR Resonance Mouthpiece?

I really hope we will be able to catch up again in the near future mate.

I have the new GVL piece as well.

This is what Tony had to say when I asked about it on a facebook post:
The mid to lower section is wider and the curve leading to the throat is more edgy.

The new cup design has more overall volume while not being deeper and this makes the sound fuller without feeling any harder to play.

The edgier curve at the bottom makes the attacks and articulation in general pop a lot more.

The bronze backbore itself helps quite a bit with sound and response. It’s still the large kind.
To me the piece feels slightly bigger than the standard M cup, which is what the previous GVL model was.

The new GVL piece is only available in bronze with gold finish.
