    Is there any reason why?
I was planning (if I decided to go with the JP) to contact Joe from Mid-South Music in the US. Otherwise I'd be going with the Wessex.

The JP wins in terms of sound for me. But golly does the Wessex look very beautiful. Unfortunately though, I have to try and not be won out just by its style, as tempting as it is.

My college is having major issues with getting 274s. The silvers are taking 3 months to get in and the lacquers a month. I’m supposed to be getting one so I’ll report my findings with the horn. Supply chain issues are real.

  3. Have you tried asking your nearest brass band if membership includes the use of their instruments?
Many of the brass bands I've seen in NSW loan out Sovereign Euphs to their members.

When you order from overseas, often it's not practical to follow up on any warranty issues because you have to send the horn back to the dealer.
So you should consider the extra money that you pay by buying locally as insurance because you are protected by NSW's Fair Trading consumer laws.

If you do buy from overseas - ask them to remove VAT. In some cases (with used instruments) there might not be VAT applicable.
You will definitely pay an import tax to the Australian government - don't forget to factor that into the cost of the instrument.

    If you are in Sydney:

Ed Diefes at Roseville have Eastman euphs

Andy Yule stocks John Packer euphs
    https://www.yulemusic.com.au/?Collection=Euphoniums

Both brands have good reputation in the "value for money" category.

I bought my Besson from Sax and Woodwind and they have excellent after-sale service.

I would chance a Yamaha euph from overseas if there were significant savings because their manufacturing consistency is excellent.

    Good luck in your search.

Hey, Jeff! I appreciate your response a lot! Unfortunately the brass band I'm in doesn't have any euphos available (I play bari instead), so my current eupho is one that my school had hired out. I just wanted to look for a somewhat low-cost eupho that I could last me for a while. I also have considered travelling down to Yule but it is a while away, and I don't particularly have time to head down to give it a try.

JP says that it does provide a 2 year warranty with its instruments at every dealer. Even including the GST and Import Fees, purchasing it from the States is still significantly lower compared to buying it from Yule.

I really appreciate the responses, everyone!

I wouldn't give your current skill level much thought as you search for a horn. None that have been described are so uniquely hard to blow or have such awful intonation that only a pro can make them sound good. If you're going to be playing in a school environment you might want to give thought to durability, since getting your shiny new horn bumped or dinged is an unfortunate reality of playing in a large group environment. If you see the euphonium as a short-term dalliance, you wouldn't want to make a large monetary investment. For a longer term relationship you can throw a bit more money toward the horn, depending on your resources and priorities. Happy hunting!
