    Adams Valves - Maintenance Tip

For Adams euphonium valves, here is a little tip that is very important but easy to remember!

Their valves have some kind of synthetic bumpers at the top of the piston and under the finger button. With 4 valves, that means there are 8 of these bumpers. They help keep the valves quiet, and most importantly they control the alignment of the pistons with the ports. If you order them from the factory or a dealer, you should get 2 packages. One has 7 bumpers and the other has a single bumper. That is because only 7 of these are identical. The oddball bumper fits on top of the 4th piston. The photo below shows the 3rd and 4th pistons, and you can easily see the different thickness of the 2 piston-top bumpers. (When they are off the instrument and laying in a pile, you might not notice the difference.) If you mix them up you will have 1 or 2 valves out of alignment, which can affect response and intonation.

So if you disassemble the instrument for cleaning or whatever, be sure to note this!
