Thread: Euphonium College Auditions

  1. Talking Euphonium College Auditions

I was wondering if I could get any recommendations on a concerto to audition to college with. I only need to perform one movement of any concerto I see fit, and I'm not in any rush as I'm currently working but love playing the Euphonium and would like more than anything to start a major in Music Education. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated!

    Welcome to the forum!

There are now a ton-and-a-half of genuine euphonium concertos to choose from. For a lot of reasons I would lean toward the Horovitz. It was arguable the first by a major composer, it is very well known (meaning it may be easier to judge a player's abilities because the listener knows how it should sound), and it does not require virtuoso abilities to do a good job. You have plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your musicality and technique.

Agree with Dave. Many out there and the Horovitz is a good choice for an audition. Another one to consider might be the Ferdinand David Trombone Concertino. It is in 3 movements, and the first movement would be a good one to play. Written for trombone, but more and more euphonium players are playing this piece.
