    Alfred Reed Celebration

Alfred Reed would have turned 100 years old this year. As a celebration a number of the bands are performing some of his works in his honor. I think there are more than 200 works to his credit. We're playing four of his compositions or arrangements at our holiday concert in December. BUT not the one most think of or his most famous work, "Russian Christmas Music" since we played that master piece fairly recently. We're playing "Greensleeves", "Clear Track Polka", "A Jubilant Overture" and "Arioso" (Bach, arr. Reed). Should be a good concert I think.

We're doing "Russian Christmas Music," the slightly simplified arrangement. So that's covered

My 1970 Arizona All-State band played Russian Christmas Music, the original.

Somehow I was first chair euph, I'll never forget that opportunity.

Every time, anywhere I played it again, the memories were grand.

It’s really good to read this.

In my area, there is a LOT of emphasis on modern wind ensemble music, and although some of the community bands still seem to be playing +/-Gr. 2 1/2 oldies, the groups playing music written since 2000 seem to be prevailing at present.

One of my aspirations when I began playing euphonium was to be able to play Gr.3 + wind ensemble music (including some of my favorites from my musical past). Alfred Reed’s music would be part of my preferred list. Happy it’s still being played.
