Thumbs up FS: Besson 4-Valve Compensating in Satin Silver

This one has several small dents, but overall it looks very nice. I don't see any geometry problems and the finish is good. It comes with a hard case, although I would not use it for checked baggage. Valves look good. Large shank receiver. Bid starts at $1,249.

Sold for $2,950 plus $58.94 shipping

Based on the 671067 serial number and bell stamp, it appears it could be a 1981 Model 767 which is a New Standard (pre-runner to the Sovereign line) though the valve bottoms, caps, and buttons are different than those typically found on a New Standard - actually look more like the Sovereign style. It may be a 1981 Model 966 - here is a related thread…

Yes, this is a Besson model 767 as Shinn has stated. I own one just like it that I purchased through Duchy Brass a few years ago. It looks very much like a New Standard, but has Sovereign-style valve trim, slightly different bell engraving, and a large shank receiver. Previously I owned a similar lacquered horn that was engraved "Imperial Besson" and also had "767" as a serial number prefix. I would guess that Besson was making sorts of "transitional" horns like these in the late '70s and early '80s as the New Standards and Imperials were being discontinued in favor of the various Sovereign models. My 767s play very well, with the typical Besson intonation issues, and similar to the 11-inch bell 966 Sovereign that I played years ago.

    Hope this helps!

Sadly, I didn’t! I was winning the auction for much of the time but, as a doubler with limited experience playing a bunch of different horns, I started doubting the decision when the bidding war took off last night. I don’t mind investing in a great instrument, but I just have a hard time spending a few thousand dollars when I haven’t played the particular instrument first. The search continues…

Hang in there! A bargain may show up, especially if you move quickly on a buy-it-now type offer that seems attractive. But with auctions, one has to be careful to not get overly excited when things ramp up near the end! It's good to have a "top price" established in your head.
