    That was great, thanks!

Every time I hear one of the American-style baritone horns played so well I feel regret for getting rid of the horn I played on as a middle schooler and I feel like hopping on eBay and picking one up. I don't even recall what my middle school horn was. My family bought it used, it had three valves and a removable curved bell, beyond that I have no idea what it was. I'm sure I didn't sound as good as Maynard, ha.

Maynard played in a trumpet clinic when I was in college, '73 or 4. He hit some astronomically high note, so loud it hurt your ears, and suffered a split lip.

The tough guy kept on playing even tho.

  5. That clip from 1959 was very cool. I don't think I've even seen anything from him that far back. You could see hints of what he was to become even there. I know it's popular to kind of trash Maynard, but I gotta say, as a kid in the 70s and 80s, I played a lot of his recordings full blast on my stereo, usually on bootlegged cassette tapes. Birdland and of course McArthur Park I think were my favorites.
