    Ellerby Concerto, MVT III

Perhaps the most beautiful, sad, and moving piece of slow, lyrical writing for the euphonium to be heard:

Martin Ellerby is a bit of a curate's egg of a composer, capable of brilliance (Tristan Encounters) but too often writing utter dross. I did buy Tormod Flaten's CD with the Ellerby Concerto on and only listened to it a couple of times because I thought it meandering and plodding (the writing not the playing which was very good). I will listen with fresh ears.
