Thread: Fingering Question: 1-2 for D, G or 3

  1. Fingering Question: 1-2 for D, G or 3

What is the preferred fingering for the middle D/G? Are there tradeoffs with tuning or intonation, etc.?

    thanks!

  2. Answer: Depends on the horn. On almost all non-comp horns, it would be 1-2. On my compensating 3 valve baritone, it is 3. On both of my euphoniums (Sterling and Adams) it is 3, however, 1-2 with trigger on the Sterling also works well.

  3. Thank you, I'm using a compensating 3+1 euphonium, so I'll try using 3.

  4. Is that G sharp using 1-2? The issue with pulling 1 or 2 to try to bring it in tune is that then your Eb's below G, A just above, middle C, and high A tend to then be flat.

  5. Thank you for your input. I'm playing a new instrument for me, so I'm trying to figure out what works. Right now, the 1-2 works for G, but 3 works better for me for D. It's probably because I'm a novice player so my mouth is all over the place. I'll just keep playing and work out whatever is best for me.

    thanks again.
