Fred Dart Euphonium - Haydn Cello Concerto - Adagio

I am going to include the entire Fred Dart album in my Historic Euphonium playlist on YouTube. Here is the first installment! (Thanks for Rick for providing me a little text to use in the YT description, when he posted a note after Mr. Dart's passing.)

Very nice! That sounds a lot better than the cassette copy Fred gave me long ago. Back then I asked him why he took it up an octave later in that piece. He said, “Because I could”. Tone, style and intonation was spot on to my ear.

    Thanks for doing this Dave.

Just before I auditioned for The U.S. Army Band in early 1971, I was at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. I played quite a bit with Fred Dart and picked his brain on auditioning in the several months leading up to the actual audition, as I learned at UNM that Fred had been the euphonium soloist with the U.S. Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. He was very helpful. I wasn't a music major, but a math major, but I did play in the Wind Ensemble, and Fred was kind enough to do some playing with me sort of off the books. I also played in the pep band for basketball games, and Fred was the director. He always wore very sharp and flashy type clothes to the games. Sort of like Doc Severinson on the Tonight Show. He would show up at the game and make a grand entrance with a long trench coat on, then take it off to reveal his clothes for the evening to the great delight of the crowd. Some fancy stores in the area would provide him with his outfits for the games. It was kind of a big deal. He was a great guy. I have some very good memories of Fred Dart.
