Conversation with Chris Olka and Hiram Diaz

Yesterday there was a live interview with Chris Olka (tuba) and Hiram Diaz (euphonium) by Eastman Winds. Thankfully it's been archived.

Thanks for posting Rick. That was a great interview and first time I have heard Hiram talking. What a delightful person and what a talent on euphonium. I consider him one of the best.

If a youngster without much euphonium knowledge wanted to find the best players around, starting at the U.S. Marine Band would be a great way to get up to speed! (And not just with this current crop - they have had some real stars...consistently!)

All the DC military band players are fantastic, and largely the jobs they've got are a function of what job opening existed when they were "ready," but Hiram is really special!

I was impressed with the fact Hiram said that while at the New World School of the Arts in Miami that he got free lessons from Jay Bertolet, very fine tubist and low-brass teacher. Landres Bryant (tuba with "President's Own") also took lessons with Mr. Bertolet while Landres was in H.S.

That was the set up we had when I was there (99-03). Mr. Bertolet has had several successful students!
