Just curious whether anyone has heard anything about this new mouthpiece design.

    Thanks!

Not really and new data, but I see the mouthpiece is on Mead's website now. Here is the 4XR

        Hi Dave!

I think Steve's new mouthpiece is actually different than the XR series - the XR is a slightly modified ultra with a rounder rim, but his "new" piece I think was still under development with Denis Wick.

        Thanks,
        Mike

Thanks, Mike. I may have dropped a detail or two in my recollection!

            Hello everyone,

The SM4XR is an absolutely incredible mouthpiece! I have personally seen and tested the new Steven Mead Prototype Mouthpiece I can say it is a really incredible mouthpiece which I am really looking forward to seeing produced.

            Best Wishes,

            Micah Dominic Parsons

Hi, I would advise you to try out the Patrik Randefalk-mouthpiece if you are looking for a mouthpiece that helps with intonation (those terrible 6th partials, especially on the Prestige 2052), provides a full and rich euphonium sound and helps with an even tone in all registers. Personally I use the R3-model (same rimsize as DW4, i.e 26mm). It works extremely well on large-bore Symphonic trombone, too...very nice to have all notes work on the same positions. Very good projection, also. I will try to post a few pictures. Just send Patrik a message through Facebook....he is the sweetest guy who answers all questions and explains...a true euphonium-geek (in the most positive way)...also when he played more actively than now he had the best sound I have ever heard on euph(!)

I have the Wick 5XR, it is very comfortable (compared to my SM4U).

Good question - I would assume at some point that they will be moving forward with it as Steve certainly praised it, and his opinion carries quite a bit of weight.

I hope that when these become available that Wick or someone else will have a booth at the conferences for these to be tried. I have tried the original AL series, the original SM series, and the original Ultra-U series. I haven't been persuaded to try the X or XR series as the descriptions say it provides more support as well as provides a more brilliant tone quality - I'm personally NOT after a more brilliant tone quality but I am sure some people are - and for those individuals, it is no wonder that these have done so well.

Hello Mica, that's really exciting... Can you share some of your experiences with the Mythos prototype with us...

Playing characteristics, Tone, contrast/advantages with other Mead mouthpieces?

                        Best, Guido
