    Visitor Messages

How do you delete visitor messages? I tried on the moderators pull down the delete, then proceed, and it said I did not select anything. How do you select the message? There appears to be no way to do this.

    John,

Could you explain exactly the steps you are taking? I don't think it is possible for you to delete a visitor post, but I'd like to know more.

You CAN report a post you think is questionable or might be a double-post. Just click on the exclamation point at the lower-left of the message panel.

    Thanks.

This is a Visitor Message, not a Visitor Post, but maybe those are the same thing??

I go to My Profile. There is a Visitor Messages tab. I click that. I have 7 Visitor Messages. 4 of them show "This message has been deleted by John Morgan". I click View Conversation of any of the three other "live" messages. It shows the messages of that visitor. There is a Moderation Tool drop down box in the lower part of the message. I click it and select the delete messages radio button. Then click Proceed... Then get the message "You did not select any valid messages". There is nothing that I can see to actually "select" any valid message. I obviously must have deleted some of these Visitor Messages before, however even they still show up in the list of Visitor Messages, they just say "This message has been deleted by John Morgan" and there is no text to the message that was sent.

Ah, I see. I was running down the wrong track.

As far as I can tell, what you see is normal. The publisher of the forum's software made a decision I don't quite understand, but there does not appear to be any setting I can change to remedy this.

Okey-dokey. I must admit, I was not even aware that I had any Visitor Messages. And I suppose after a year or more, the Visitor must have gotten tired of waiting for me to answer!!

The whole Visitor Message thing is very poorly implemented (and maybe was never fully thought through or fully implemented or certainly tested by a sane human). That being said, I've discovered that I can "delete" a message by

    1. Click the "Report" check box in the message title line.
    2. Click the Delete Messages radio button in the Moderation Tasks dropdown.
    3. Click the Proceed button at the bottom of that dropdown.
    4. When the Delete Messages dialog appears, click the Delete button that is under the (apparently totally useless and sensless) Deletion Options box.

I am then rewarded with a dialog box informing me that messages have been deleted just a couple of seconds before it blinks out of existence and takes me to the My Activity tab in my profile. If I then click on the Visitor Messages tab, I can see that the message has been deleted.

Well, sort of deleted. You can still click the View Conversation link for the message (whose sender and title are still displayed in the message list), but all you get is a display of "This message has been deleted by <you>". However at some point (I THINK after you log out), something is flushed and you no longer see the View Conversation selection even though each of the ghost messages still listed (WHY?) retains the Report link -- I guess in case you would like to report something to the board administrator about a message for which you no longer have the content and which you almost certainly can't remember.

You can't make this stuff up. Unfortunately, it appears to exhibit what has become "best practice" in web software development.
