Thread: Default Mouthpiece for YEP-321

  1. Default Mouthpiece for YEP-321

Hello, I'm completely new to Euphonium and just bought used Yamaha YEP-321 (it was cheap), but it didn't come with mouthpiece.

What is the default mouthpiece(one that originally came with) for YEP-321 and how much do they go for?

Also, is there a mouthpiece you'd recommend for a beginner? (prefer same brand mouthpiece but other brand are okay too)

The mouthpiece that comes standard with this horn is a Yamaha 48M small shank mouthpiece. Probably about $50 at places like Musician's Friend. Go with this one.

    Welcome to the forum!

I think the 321 ships with a Yamaha 48, but that is pretty small. I might suggest the following. They are all OK for someone starting out, but they go from easier to harder (with the generally easy range) and from a smaller sound to a better sound.

Faxx 6-1/2 AL. It is a copy of the Bach 6-1/2 AL, but pretty good:

Bach 5G, but they are expensive. A Jupiter copy might be just the thing. Good compromise between easy/hard, and small/large sound:

Schilke 51D is the best, but a little harder for a beginner. A cheaper Yamaha copy is a good choice:

NOTE: you need a small shank mouthpiece, sometimes called a tenor-trombone size.

If you want to go a bit bigger, Yamaha has 51 and 51D small shank mouthpieces, which area bit smaller than the schilke equivalent. Also, Faxx now makes a 51D small shank, but usually you can't find those on amazon.

  6. Thank you so much for the recommendations! I checked every single one of them and for me, probably because of my location (Canada), clones besides Schilke 51D were more expensive for me.

I looked at Amazon.ca, Amazon.com, Ebay and these S&H rates were just horrible, some double the price of the item itself.

Ones I found on Amazon.ca are:

Bach Small Shank Trombone Mouthpiece Silver 5G (3505G) - $46.95 CAD

    Bach 3506HAL Trombone Mouthpiece 6 1/2AL - $88.99 CAD

All the Yamaha ones are "Temporarily Out of Stock" and according to Google it could take months to ship so I just gave up on that.

I found different models of SL48D and SL51D, one without "D" and one with "S" but I'm not sure if they were the right ones so I omitted them.

At this point, I'm not sure which one to buy. Bach 5G seem to be cheapest (assuming this is the right model, I'm still not sure) and seem to be good deal(looks cheaper compared to Amazon.com and Ebay for sure) but I'm also leaning towards Schilke 51D, which was the best recommendation and most expensive one out of all the recommendations.

As stated in the first post, I'm new to this so maybe I don't need expensive one but am I better off buying expensive one as it will probably serve me better in long run? Schilke 51D costs around $100 USD from eBay which is probably like $130+ CAD. There are $75 USD option on Amazon but unfortunately seller isn't Amazon.com and third-party so I'll likely have to pay hefty shipping fees.

Any advice on deciding them would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I know this post is over a month old. I use a Faxx 6 1/2AL on my medium bore trombone and find that it works well for both jazz and concert bands. Its been a great mouthpiece and is about 1/2 the price of a Bach.

  8. To add to Dave Werden's list of mouthpieces, Wick makes a 4AY (similar to 4AL and 4AM but small shank). This is what I use on a Yamaha 321, but it is not a beginners mouthpiece. Also, the Yamaha 48 is VERY close to a Bach 6 1/2 AL.
