FS: Besson New Standard 4-Valve Compensating Euphonium - Satin Silver

The condition looks very good for a horn of this vintage. You can expect the classic Besson sound and ease of playing. It appears a gig bag is included.

Starting bid is $1,500. I think it could go $1k above that and still be a good value. A sample in this condition is hard to find, so don't wait if you are looking for a horn like this!

    ITEM SOLD FOR $2,150

The serial number for this horn (551178) indicates this is definitely a 1971-1974 instrument, likely 1972 or 1973 but definitely not 1950s. It could well be a large shank horn from the factory. I cannot tell by looking at the two Schilke mouthpieces included with the horn (a 51D and a 57) and there are no close up pictures of the receiver. If a medium shank, it originally would have come with a Besson 10 mouthpiece and a tenor to medium shank adapter.

Assuming the valves are in good shape, this is a nice horn up to $2,500. I would prefer it to a 1950s horn since there is a good chance the older horn could be a converted high pitch horn.

Does the pitting on picture #3 worry you?

Looks more like a New Standard to me. Imperials had 'regular' valve buttons if I remember correctly.

No, it's pretty standard when I horn has been well used.

Thanks for the two corrections above. I took out the bogus date and modified the name of the horn.

Just an FYI, I asked the ebay seller about valve condition and whether he would add pictures of the valves. The response I got:

"The technician said there was some plating peeling on the pistons, but rebuilding the valves was not recommended at this time. "

I have a friend in one of my bands who I recommend this instrument to, and he had the winning bid. He was borrowing a nearly identical horn from a friend and wanted one for himself, so this was a natural fit especially with its price point. I look forward to hearing him play it!
