Re-covering a case

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about refurbishing an old (ancient!) Sovereign case?

It’s one of the vintage blue ones (I’ve two in fact), and appears to covered in a oil cloth, certainly cloth with a lacquer coating on. The wooden shell I can titivate myself but I’m struggling a little with the final tough.

Any thoughts or suggestions with be very gratefully received!
