Purely from the virtual point of view of my mind's eye, the two solutions are likely equally gorgeous... If price difference were not a factor, I would select the one whose tone and playing characteristics I preferred.

Question for David.... Is the yellow brass bell in 0.70 thickness?

The horn with the silver is my own, a .60 E3. The other is a .70 yellow brass E3.

I'm testing the yellow horn to see how I like the sound compared to my own. The sterling silver bells adds a nice color, but yellow brass is also nice sounding. The heavier brass may help it "keep up" with the sterling silver. We'll see how it goes!

Thank you so much Dave, it would be very interesting if you could do a comparative A/B recording of the two E3s similar to the one you did for E1/E3 for us to listen to...

Meantime, will we hear you playing the two horns side by side live at ITEC?

    Barry,

Correct me if I am wrong, but on the Adams sterling bell horns, only the flare is sterling silver. The rest of bell throat is brass. So on Dave's horn with the silver bell, the bell is plated separately from the rest of the horn anyway. Then the brush finish and lacquer are done after assembly.

The whole bell is sterling silver from where it connects to the bottom bow.

Here is an X-Ray from airport security, showing an Adams with the sterling silver bell. It's pretty easy to see its extra density!

Maybe it's because trends always circle back, maybe it's because you so seldom see an all-gold/yellow/"brass" colored professional-level horn, but I personally think the all-gold looks a little more striking in this case. That rich, deep gold color is really nice.

  10. Count me in for the yellow brass. Classic and understated suits me more.
