Suitable Cuts to "An American Portrait" by Lewis Buckley

I have a student preparing this piece for State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Indiana. ISSMA only allows students 5 minutes to perform. We are to make suitable cuts to music that is longer than 5 minutes. "An American Portrait" is about 7.5 minutes in length. Does anyone have any idea where to cut this solo?

    Welcome to the forum!

I don't have a ready answer for you, but some others here might. Or you could ask your band director for advice.

Even better, if you are on Facebook you could message the arranger:

I've played it several times, you might really rip thru the opening cadenza, and lose the "Battle Hymn" without hurting anything.
