Thread: Best Melodic Euphonium Solos

  1. Best Melodic Euphonium Solos

I've been searching for melodic euphonium solos to practice lately. I'm looking for a piece where I can focus on my tone, not so much technical work so not a theme and variation or modern concerto. What are the best melodic euphonium solos out there? Piano accompaniment or unaccompanied preferred because I'm not looking to purchase a full band arrangement. Some examples I've come up with:

    Panache - Dewhurst Robin
    Arioso - Bach
Rhapsody for euphonium - James Curnow
    Vocalise - Rachmaninov arr. Mead
    Oh Danny Boy
    You Raise Me Up
    Gabriel's Oboe
    Yamaha Neo 642TSII
    Denis Wick SM4 Ultra X

Those you listed so far all sound good to me for working on tone. Since the euphonium is often considered a “tenor solo instrument”, I like playing some solos of my favorite tenor vocalist. In my case that’s Nat King Cole. Songs like, Mona Lisa, Unforgettable, Stardust, etc. These old songs also help me with phrasing or breathing in the right places. Also “Nesun Dorma” would be a great piece to practice. Don’t forget the “Lord’s Prayer” (Malotte). Helps in developing a good tone at softer dynamics.

Kenneth D. Friedrich wrote a nice melodic piece for euphonium and piano: Ballade in D flat. It's not difficult. Range is from F below the BC staff to high B flat above. His website is http://www.kfsbrasschamber.com/
SheetMusicPlus has a preview and a link to a recording.

The Holy Well by Peter Graham and Summer Isles by Phillip Sparke, both excerpts taken from larger brass band works, are beautiful euphonium solos around the 4 minutes mark. They both have piano accompaniment available.
