Making a list of euphonium concertos

    Hello all,

I have started a little project recently - I am attempting to catalog every known euphonium concerto into a single spreadsheet.

I am looking to only document pieces that meet the following critera:
    • Were originally written for euphonium (not trombone, baritone, or anything else)
    • Contains "concerto" or some variation thereof in its title or subtitle
    • Has been published, OR at least performed more than one time

And, as you will see, I am looking to list the following information:
    • Composer (Last name, First name)
    • Title of Piece
    • Year of Composition
    • Existing Ensemble Accompaniment
    • Additional Notable Information (no piano accompaniment, weird mutes, etc.)

I have linked the document below. There is some information missing for some pieces, and I certain that I am missing a number of concertos. Currently, no one can edit the document but me, so I ask that if you wish to contribute to it, you can comment below or send me a message.

Hopefully we can create a helpful resource for the future!

Interesting use of the phrase "little project" above! If you really want the list to be comprehensive, there are a bunch of pieces that are not easily found.

The link below shows what my Euphonium Music Guide has for "concerto" - note that it has not been updated for several years. Newer pieces won't be there, and it's possible some of the existing listings were not published at the time but have been since.

For the most part, this list matches your goal of finding truly original works. There are some that are more gray, though. The Bourgeois concerto, for example, was done first for trombone, I think, but it was not clear at the time if the composer did the euph version from scratch or as a re-publication of the trombone concerto.

I assume you have looked at the Euphonium Source Book as well??

That is more fully notated that my guide. You should also look through the ITEA review archives, where many such pieces are first announced.

Really more of chamber piece then a 'concerto' per say.

        Composer: Hovhannes, Alan
Title of Piece. Concerto no 3 (Diran, The Religious Singer)
        Year of Composition: 1948
Existing Ensemble Accompaniment: Strings, can get away without having the bass part
Additional Notable Information: The 2nd Movement "Aria" , the string part can be rewritten for piano and it works fine. Otherwise, use an organ for the 1st and 3rd movement in absence of strings.

Thank you so much! I have used the Repertoire Guide, but not your resource. I will be sure to scour that.

Updated with information with Dave's Euphonium Music Guide, and with the Barfield and Hovhaness concertos.
