    Solo ideas

Hi . I'm looking for a solo to play with my band but i dont know what to play .
i have 10 years of experience with a euphonium but i struggle with my triple tonguing .id prefer a slower piece to a fast one but im open mind and willing to spend some time on it .

My go-to is the Curnow Rhapsody.
Has slow and fast parts, but no triple tonguing.
    Audience-friendly. Not difficult.
Can be done on 1-2 rehearsals with a good band.

American Portrait by Buckley, just in time for 4 July.

    6 min of crowd-pleasers, not grade 5.

I was going to suggest the same piece as Snorlax. Starts off with a slow-haunting melody by euphonium alone and is in Am Dorian mode so sounds almost major. Tempo picks up as it progresses. It’s right at 6 mins in length.

Here’s a link to listen to Toru Miura playing this with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra:

My grandson is playing this piece this today (Sunday) as a senior with Enloe H.S. Wind Ensemble at the joint concert with Triangle Brass Band at the Duke Performing Center (hope and pray it goes well).

My thought is that everyone does this piece because it is a great piece, and you will stand out if you do a good job with it. I guarantee that the audience is not going to think, "Wow, every body does this, how boring". Rhapsody is unique in that it has something to offer whether the performer is a pro or newbie. If you are looking for something else, Fantasy Variations by Yashude Ito is a great piece. It is more challenging then Rhapsody and the band part is much harder. Another to consider is the Gordon Jacob Fantasia.

  8. Here are a couple of possibilities for slow, melodic solos. One is Stephen Foster’s “Gentle Annie” arranged by Loras John Schissel and published by Ludwig.

Another possibility is Enrico Morricone’s “Gabriel’s Oboe” arranged by Robert Longfield and published by EMI Virgin Music.

Both pieces come with solo parts for several different instruments, both go over well with audiences, and both can be worked up to performance standard pretty quickly, if that’s an issue.

Here's a very pretty slow melody, "Summer Isles", by Philip Sparke:

This is a brass band version, but Sparke's web site says there is a wind band version.
