    Canadian Brass featuring euphonium

At this time of year, I'm always listening to a lot of Christmas music in the car and today I was listening to one of my favorite Christmas brass recordings by the Canadian Brass. It's an older recording from 1990 when most of the original CB were still part of the group.

What suddenly dawned on me was how much euphonium was used in this recording. I know that Eugene Watts was a fine euphonium player as well as trombonist, but I hadn't realized that he plays euphonium on most of the cuts in this recording. The trumpet players play their flugelhorns quite a bit, as well, giving a very mellow, conical sound to most of the recording. If you're looking for a somewhat different Christmas brass recording, let me recommend it. It's out of print, but the Amazon link below has a number of new and used options in various formats.

BTW, I believe that E Watts had Wilson make a front valve version of a compensating euphonium that was marketed in the Canadian Brass collection of horns. I'm assuming that he's playing one of those horns in this recording.

He solely plays Euphonium on their excellent recording of the Goldberg Variations as well, as stated on the back of the CD, although he poses with his trombone on the front cover.
