Dave: I bought one that I use at home, and I think it's an excellent stand. I have not tried packing it up to take to a gig, but I do use it to hold my horn all the time at home (I had the same air-drying theory that you mentioned).
The only gigs I do lately with euphonium are outdoor summer concerts at a park, and I feel a little more secure putting the horn in its case during intermission (after all, a shiny horn sitting in a stand would be irresistible to small, curious hands).
