  1. Mouthpiece suggestion for York Grand Rapids euph

Howdy folks, my first post here!
I've recently purchased a nice old York made "Grand Rapids Band Inst. Co" euphonium.
Its a fine player, needs some work which I will do (I'm a tech) but in the meantime I'm having a blast playing it.

Before I delve in, a quick condensed background: I've been a drummer for almost 30 years but have been a multi-instrumentalist since my early 20's, my first brass instrument was an old euph (since sold) and I've owned/played/sold many other horns but mostly trombone and tuba/sousa.

So I picked up this old euph thinking I'd like to have one around. It came with a Bach 12C mouthpiece which I don't mind but I'm wondering about something that might be a better match.
This is a small bore instrument, 11" bell with approx .550" bore at 2nd valve slide.
    Any suggestions?
Oh it takes a standard shank mouthpiece (the Bach 12C is standard trombone shank not large shank)

I'm looking for something fairly economical, this instrument gets played quite a bit but I'm far from a pro or a rich person!
    thanks,
    Mark Kaylor

Welcome to the forum! Given the small bore of this horn, I'd suggest that a 6-1/2AL might be a good choice.

You can buy a Bach brand here for 66 bucks:

Or you can go with a Kelly lexan mouthpiece. Their mouthpieces are very well made. It would be about 35 bucks with shipping:

  3. Yeah I was thinking about a 6 1/2 AL, funny thing is I JUST had one in my shop a few months back when I sold a bunch of student trombones. I ended up giving it to some kid who needed it. I'll have to keep my eyes out for one locally.
Also, I didn't mention this originally, but I would be also interested in tracking down an actual "York" euphonium mouthpiece, something that might have come with the horn originally. Not sure about their numbering system or whatever, but I have poked around Ebay a bit, haven't turned up much.
    thanks,
    mark

  4. Before you purchase a mouthpiece, check the taper of the receiver. Old York receivers had a different taper than "Bach Standard."

If it really is a standard receiver, FAXX has excellent Bach clones for a fraction of the cost.

Here is a link for the FAXX 6-1/2AL:

It's only about 30 bucks, and is metal.

In fact, I have one of those. It's a perfectly good 6-1/2AL. I don't use it -- but only becasue I don't have anything that a 6 1/2AL works on well. I wish FAXX made more models of the trombone/euphonium/tuba mouthpieces. But they seem to stick with the "common denominators".

Yes. See how the taper is different.
