Be wary of emptying a slide prior to a solo (on euphonium)!

6 measures prior to a solo (at quarter note = 60) was when I decided I should empty my 3rd valve slide!

It seemed like a good idea at the time because I was getting paranoid that there might be that "bubbling" sound. It turned out it wasn't really needed, and the risk of missing the entrance would've been FAAR worse and noticeable than the alternative! I'm on a used instrument that while serviceable, has some cases of "fumbling"... took 'several tries' to get it in (so it took a bit of time to get it back in). In this case, I was able to get the slide back in 2 measures prior to the solo. Lesson learned almost the hard way.

That sounds a bit scary. One reason I'm glad my present horn has a water key on its 3rd slide. My Yamaha 641 did not.
